Description
Convolvulus eyreanus, commonly known as Eyre’s Bindweed, is a perennial herb, native to Australia, with trailing and twining stems. Found in the north-east part of South Australia, growing on inland sand dunes and associated habitats, often growing in Acacia shrublands. Also found in Queensland and New South Wales.
Leaves are very variable in shape, upper leaves ovate to oblong, to 35 mm long and 20 mm, acute to rounded, mucronulate, base hastate or sagittate, margin serrate to shallowly lobed, basal lobes often more prominent, terminal lobe entire to shallowly-lobed, dense hairs on both sides.
This resilient species produces attractive funnel-shaped flowers that range from white to pale pink, often with a darker throat. Flowering can occur over extended periods following rainfall, providing an important nectar source for native insects and pollinators. Its deep root system allows it to withstand harsh drought conditions, making it well adapted to Australia’s challenging inland environments.
Common name: Desert Burley: Australian Bindweed; Inland Bindweed
Germination Tips: To germinate Convolvulus eyreanus seeds, soak them in lukewarm water for 24 hours, then sow them 2-5mm deep in a seed-starting mix, keeping the soil moist but not soggy, and providing a warm environment of around 21-27°C, use a heat mat if required. Germination can take anywhere from 2 to 4 weeks.
