Description

Cleistocactus colademononis, commonly known as the Monkey Tail Cactus, is a striking and unusual trailing cactus prized for its long, cascading stems covered in soft, silvery-white spines. Native to the high-altitude regions of Bolivia, this eye-catching species is perfectly suited to hanging baskets and elevated planters, where its dramatic, tail-like stems can spill freely over the sides.

The stems can grow several metres in length over time, forming thick, rope-like trails that create a sculptural statement in any indoor or outdoor collection. Despite its wild appearance, the spines are relatively soft compared to many other cacti, giving the plant a furry, almost plush texture that makes it especially appealing to collectors.

During the warmer months, Cleistocactus colademononis produces vibrant tubular flowers in shades of deep red to magenta. These blooms emerge from the sides of mature stems and provide a brilliant contrast against the pale, woolly spines. Flowering is more prolific when the plant receives ample bright light and a cooler rest period during winter.

Ideal Growing Conditions.

Cleistocactus colademononis thrives in bright, indirect light to full sun and prefers a well-draining cactus or succulent mix. Like most cacti, it requires minimal watering—allow the soil to dry out between waterings, particularly during the cooler months when growth slows. Good airflow and proper drainage are essential to prevent rot.

Pruning: Remove dead or rotting limbs

Pests and Diseases: The most common issue is mealybugs, which appear as small white, cottony clusters along the stems and in crevices. They feed on plant sap and can weaken growth if left untreated. Because Monkey Tail cactus has dense, hairy spines, mealybugs can sometimes hide deep within the fur-like covering, making early detection important.

Soil: You need a high quality potting mix, not a pre-bagged product such as you find at Bunnings etc, try a landscaping place. However, as I am not local to you I still can’t say if they have good quality or not. You are looking for well composted pine bark and large particles. This ensures air flow to the roots and good drainage. When time to re-pot, select a pot one size up ONLY and ensure it has many holes for good drainage.

Fertiliser: We recommend and use Yates Nutricote Standard Black 270 Day Controlled Release Fertiliser however any good quality slow release fertiliser will do. We also stock an Australian Made liquid indoor fertiliser The Plant Runner Indoor Plant Food which is easy to use and odourless.
