Description
Ceratonia siliqua, commonly known as Carob, is a flowering evergreen tree or shrub. It is widely cultivated for its edible pods, seeds for a chocolate substitute and as an ornamental tree in gardens and landscapes. Prefers moderately fertile well drained soil. Will tolerate dry conditions but does better for occasional water during summer.
The carob tree is native to the Mediterranean region and the Middle East. Most trees are dioecious (male and female flowers are on separate plants). The large catkin-like flowers are borne on spurs growing along the branches and trunk. Only the female tree will produce fruit. The pith in the pods is extremely sweet and was the main source of sugar before the use of sugarcane. Sucking the sweet stuff out of the pods is yummy and fun for the kids.

Germination Tips: Scarification is required to germinate Ceratonia siliqua seeds. Ssimply the soak the seeds in warm water until swollen, which is approximately 24 hours. Plant the swollen seeds individually in deep containers like forestry tubes to accommodate their fast-growing taproot, cover the swollen seeds with media (2-4cm). Maintain a soil temperature of 22°C to 28°C. You can use a heat mat if starting them indoors. Germination typically occurs within 12 to 40 days
