Description

Bixa orellana, also known as Achiote or Lipstick Tree, is a fast-growing, evergreen shrub or small tree native to the tropical regions of Central and South America. It typically reaches a height of 3 to 6 metres and is prized both for its ornamental value and its vivid red seeds, which are a major source of natural dye.

The plant produces large, heart-shaped leaves that are bright green and glossy, providing a lush backdrop to its delicate pink to pale rose-coloured flowers. These blooms grow in terminal clusters and are followed by distinctive, spiny, capsule-like fruits that split open to reveal numerous bright reddish-orange seeds.

These seeds are covered in a resinous coating rich in bixin, a natural carotenoid pigment used worldwide as annatto dye. Traditionally, the seeds have been used by Indigenous cultures for body paint, food colouring, and in folk medicine, particularly for skin and digestive ailments.

Bixa orellana thrives in full sun and well-draining soils and prefers warm, humid climates. Its vibrant appearance and usefulness in both culinary and cosmetic applications make it a valuable multipurpose plant in tropical gardens and agroforestry systems.

Germination Tips: To germinate Bixa orellana seeds sow seeds 1-2 cm deep – Bright indirect light is ideal for germination. Keep soil evenly moist (not soggy) but not water-logged. Germination may take 2+-4 weeks at a temperature of around 25–30°C. Maintain high humidity by covering with plastic or using a propagation dome.

Optional Scarification (Not essential but can be helpful): Lightly rub seeds with sandpaper or soak in warm water (not boiling) for 24 hours to soften the seed coat.
