Artemisia annua, known as Sweet Annie, is an aromatic annual herb native to Asia but now grown worldwide for its medicinal properties and unique fragrance. Sweet Annie has been used in Chinese traditional medicine to treat fevers and other ailments. Its use in treating malaria has gained global recognition and has been integrated into modern medicine.

Artemisia annua grows 1 to 3 metres in height with lacy, light green, fern-like foliage. It’s flowers are small, yellow and inconspicuous, blooming in late Summer to Autumn. It prefers full sun and a well draining soil. It requires moderate watering but is drought tolerant once established.

The plant is renowned for its medicinal properties, particularly for treating malaria. The active compound, artemisinin, derived from its leaves, is effective against malaria parasites. he discovery of artemisinin and its effectiveness against malaria has had a significant impact on global health efforts, particularly in regions where malaria is endemic.

Germination Tips: Artemisia annua seeds need light to germinate, so just sprinkle them on the surface. Do NOT bury the seeds. Use a spray bottle to lightly mist the surface. You want it moist but not soggy. Provide a warm environment of around 18-24°C, use a heat mat if required. Germination can take anywhere from 1 to 2 weeks.
