Description

Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, also known as Uva Ursi or Bearberry, is a low-growing evergreen shrub native to North America, Europe, and Asia. It typically reaches heights of 10-30 cm and spreads horizontally via underground rhizomes. Bearberry thrives in cooler climates, including subarctic regions, and is often found in sandy, acidic soils. It is often used as ground cover in gardens and landscapes due to its attractive foliage and ability to withstand poor soil conditions.

Uva Ursi has traditionally be used to treat infections and inflammation of the lower urinary tract. Used historically by Native Americans and in European folk medicine, this herb treats urinary tract infections (UTIs), kidney stones, and bladder issues.

The leaves contain several compounds, including arbutin, hydroquinone, tannins, and flavonoids. Arbutin is thought to be the main active component responsible for its antimicrobial properties.

Common name: Bearberry; Kinnikinnick; Pinemat Manzanita.

Germination Tips: Germination of Arctostaphylos uva-ursi seeds can be challenging due to their hard seed coat. To improve germination rates, seeds should undergo a cold stratification (Place seeds in a sealed plastic bag with moist vermiculite or sand, then refrigerate, not freeze) period of about 2-3 months at temperatures of 2-5°C before sowing in early spring. Sow seeds in a well-draining seed-starting mix, covering them lightly with soil.
