Description

Agonis flexuosa, commonly known as the peppermint tree or willow myrtle, is a species of tree in the Myrtaceae family, native to the southwest of Western Australia. The Agonis flexuosa plant is an evergreen tree that typically grows to a height of 10-15 metres, though it can sometimes reach up to 20 metres. It has a weeping, graceful form with drooping branches.

The leaves are narrow, lance-shaped, and can be up to 15 cm long. When crushed, they emit a strong peppermint scent, which is how the tree gets its common name. The bark is rough and fibrous, often peeling in long strips.

The tree produces small, white, five-petaled flowers that grow in clusters along the stems. Flowering usually occurs in spring and early summer. The fruit is a small, woody capsule containing seeds.

Due to its attractive weeping habit and fragrant leaves, Agonis flexuosa is commonly used in landscaping and as a street tree in suitable climates. The leaves can be used to extract essential oils that have a peppermint-like aroma. In some indigenous cultures, parts of the tree have been used for medicinal purposes.

Ideal Growing Conditions.

Agonis flexuosa typically grows in sandy soils in coastal areas, woodlands, and along riverbanks. It is well adapted to Mediterranean climates with wet winters and dry summers. It prefers full sun to partial shade with well-drained soils. It can tolerate a range of soil types, including sandy and loamy soils. Once established, it is relatively drought-tolerant, but young trees require regular watering.

Pruning: Minimal pruning is needed. Lightly prune after flowering to maintain shape or remove any dead or crossing branches. Avoid heavy cutting into old wood, as new growth may not return quickly.

Pests and Diseases: Agonis flexuosa are generally pest and disease resistant. Occasionally, you may see sap-sucking insects, like aphids, psyllids or scale, which can be controlled with insecticidal soap, Eco Oil or Neem Oil

Soil: You need a high quality potting mix, not a pre-bagged product such as you find at Bunnings etc, try a landscaping place. However, as I am not local to you I still can’t say if they have good quality or not. You are looking for well composted pine bark and large particles. This ensures air flow to the roots and good drainage. When time to re-pot, select a pot one size up ONLY and ensure it has many holes for good drainage.

Fertiliser: We recommend and use Yates Nutricote Standard Black 270 Day Controlled Release Fertiliser however any good quality slow release fertiliser will do. We also stock an Australian Made liquid indoor fertiliser The Plant Runner Indoor Plant Food which is easy to use and odourless

We cannot send plants to Western Australia & Tasmania due to restrictions.

We strongly recommended to select Express Post shipping for all plant orders to minimise the transit time.
