Agave potatorum ‘Purple Haze’ is a rare and highly ornamental cultivar of Agave potatorum, admired for its vibrant colouration, sculptural form, and compact size. It’s a favourite among collectors and designers seeking a dramatic focal point in containers or arid landscapes.

Agave potatorum ‘Purple Haze’ are typically a 30-45 cm wide rosette. Its leaves are thick, broad, and blue-grey with flushes of lavender, mauve, or purple hues, especially in strong sun or cold. It’s margins are intricately scalloped with striking red to burgundy spines. The leaf colouration deepens with stress from light or temperature—hence the name ‘Purple Haze’.

Purple Haze is perfect for containers, modern gardens, succulent displays, or desert-themed arrangements. It make a excellent specimen plant in patios or rock gardens where its colour can be appreciated up close.

Germination Tips: To germinate Agave potatorum seeds it is best to use a container with drainage holes. Layer with high quality potting mix and top layer with zeolite – layers of 2 cm each is fine. Sow seeds on top of the moist zeolite, cover seeds with a thin layer. Place the container somewhere warm, but not exposed to direct sunlight. The temperature needed for Agave to germinate is 25°C and above.
