Description

Acacia denticulosa, commonly known as Sandpaper Wattle, is a rare and highly ornamental shrub native to the southwest of Western Australia. Renowned for its unique rough-textured foliage and bright golden flower clusters, this striking Acacia makes an exceptional feature plant for native gardens and collectors of unusual Australian species.

Growing to around 1–3 metres tall, Acacia denticulosa forms a dense, sculptural shrub with thick serrated phyllodes that feel similar to fine sandpaper. Masses of vivid yellow globular flowers appear through the cooler months, attracting bees and beneficial pollinators to the garden.

This species thrives in well-drained sandy or gravelly soils and prefers a sunny position with good airflow. Once established it is relatively drought tolerant, though it dislikes prolonged humidity and poorly drained conditions. Suitable for waterwise gardens, native landscapes and container growing in dry climates.

Acacia denticulosa can be grown from seed following hot water treatment or scarification and benefits from low-phosphorus native plant fertilisers only.

Germination Tips: To increase the germination rate you should treat the seed first. Soaked in hot water or the seed can be nicked or scarred. This will allow water to penetrate the seed’s hard coating and induce germination. Use a sandy free draining soil mix and place in a warm area.
