Description
Acacia complanata, known as Flat-Stemmed Wattle, is a perennial tree native to Eastern Australia. It can grow 5 to 6 m tall, but more often it grows as a large shrub. The green parts of this species contain beta carboline type alkaloids.
This ornamental wattle thrives in loamy and gravelly soils, typically inhabiting low ridges. In southeast Queensland, it establishes itself as an understorey shrub within open forests predominantly characterized by scribbly gum (Eucalyptus racemosa) or spotted gum (Corymbia citriodora). Although its presence is more pronounced in bushland areas extending from Brisbane to the Sunshine Coast, this ornamental wattle can still be observed from Coffs Harbour to Bundaberg.
Common Name: Long Pod Wattle
Germination Tips: To increase the germination rate, seed should be treated first. The seed can be soaked in hot water or the seed can be nicked or scarred so that water will penetrate the seed’s hard coating and induce germination. Use a sandy free draining soil mix and place in a warm area.
