Acacia burkittii (Sandhill Wattle) Seed

Description

Acacia burkittii is rich in tryptamine alkaloids. It grows as an erect or spreading small shrub growing up to 1-4m in height. Found in arid zones, it is endemic to Western Australia, South Australia and western New South Wales. This species is notable for its fine, needle-like foliage and its ability to thrive in a variety of environments, from coastal regions to inland areas.

Its foliage consists of slender, linear leaves that give the plant a delicate and airy appearance. These leaves are often a pale green colour and can create a feathery texture, adding visual interest to landscapes. Acacia burkittii produces abundant clusters of yellow flowers, which bloom profusely during the spring and summer months. The fragrant flowers attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies which contributes to the biodiversity of their habitat.

Once referred to as Acacia acuminata subsp. burkittii, it is now considered a separate species. Acacia burkittii grows in mallee, eucalypt and mulga woodland or shrubland, often on sandhills. It is also tolerant of drought and frosts and is moderately salt tolerant. They produce bright yellow flowers 0.5–1.5 cm long.

Germination Tips: To increase the germination rate you should treat the seed first. Soak your seed in hot water, or the seed can be nicked or scarred. This will allow water to penetrate the seed’s hard coating and induce germination. Use a sandy free draining soil mix and place in a warm area.
