Catharanthus spp.

The Catharanthus genus, like the genus Vinca, are known commonly as periwinkles. The genus has 8 known species. Seven are endemic to Madagascar, though one, C. roseus, is widely naturalized around the world. The eighth species, C. pusillus, is native to India and Sri Lanka. C. roseus contains more than 70 alkaloids mostly of the indole type, and some even closely related to ibogaine. The rootbark contains the alkaloid alstonine. The related and very rare species C. lanceus has been shown to contain up to 6% yohimbine in the foliage, possibly one of the highest yielding plants.
