Pau d'Arco is traditionally used in Western medicine as an expectorant, due to this it may assist during flu and cold season and for easing smokers cough.

It should be noted that ethnomedical use of Tabebuia teas is usually short-term, to treat acute ailments, and not as a general tonic. The main active compound in Pau D Arco, lapachol, has been found to have toxic properties.
